The Granny Candleholders

Estate sales, thrifting, and more vintage references are rising in popularity: often found among their treasures are vintage milk glass vases with fluting and slim silhouettes.

Inspired by thrift store finds that used to belong to someone’s grandma, this design enhances the attitude of everyday luxury that consumers use candles to achieve. The design can be produced in different heights to create the perfect family of objects to cluster for a charming centerpiece.

The milk glass reflects and interplays with the light of the candle, catching reflections in its scalloped ridges.

The prototype was cast in Rockite.

Rendered in Keyshot.

Inspiration & Sketching

Estate sales, thrifting, and vintage stores are rising in popularity: often found among their treasures are vintage vases.

I identified and researched this trend, focusing particularly on the material of milk glass. My sketches explored how the fluting and slim silhouettes typical of the vintage vase style could be incorporated into a candleholder.

Process

I designed a five-part 3D printed mold in Rhino 3D and cast prototypes in Rockite. I iterated through three rounds of testing to perfect sprue placement, registration marks, and tolerancing.

Broken prototype castings inspired me to re-imagine the Grandma Candleholder as a family; four candleholders of different heights, playing on the design’s fluted motif.
