Penthouse Chaise

This solid oak chaise was designed to lend an organic silhouette to the Elle Decor 53 W 53rd Penthouse, designed by Joe Nahem of Fox-Nahem. Its asymmetrical curves contrast with the enormous windows through which the Manhattan skyline shines. Inspired by river stones, the chaise expresses the shapes of nature in a form made possible by a CNC router.

Designed as a member of the Ottra team during a summer internship and subsequent part-time employment.

Process

The chaise was designed with its exact location in the penthouse in mind. After a process of iterative sketching based on team feedback, I modeled the form in Rhino 3d. Then, I sliced the form into horizontal slices and composed cut sheets for the shop team to construct thick oak glue-ups that were CNC routed and reassembled.
